StanUzbeck hits the nail on the head. Fellini was the David Lynch of 60s Italy: a cinematographic genius who made mostly unwatchable movies because he couldn't bother finding decent scripts. Instead, he filmed his sexual fantasies, actor improv, and third-rate Freudian symbolism: the result, usually, is a cinematic train-wreck. It's been years since I saw any of his stuff, but except for La Dolce Vita, I don't think there's a single one of his movies I could sit though again without falling asleep...

The early stuff was great, before he got pretensious and weird.

Master of the bizzarre and surreal cinema. He finds the most interesting people as extras in his films. He is heavy into symbolism, and most of his films have a haunting, dreamlike quality. He also has an outrageous sense of humor.

I've only seen one of his films, but it gave me a pretty good sense of his style of moviemaking. Technically he's superb, and has a real flair for visuals, but take away these qualities and he is David Lynch. This is the kind of stuff that is admired by people who wear black clothing and horn-rimmed eyeglasses and have cigarette holders and affected Euro-trash accents and who consider themselves the intellectual elite despite the fact that they don't understand art any more than the average Joe does but claim to appreciate it because it makes them feel superior to people who will always be more popular and good-looking and successful and happy. I have seen these people, and spoken with them; they don't really care to discuss anything because they're deathly afraid that you're going to say something wittier or more insightful than them. Fellini is one of these people, only he has talent, and friends.
