They're talented, but people vastly overrate Kurt's playing.

It is hard to see why a band who simply tried to re-invent the awful, noisy rock sound of the 1980s by making it harder and less tuneful should be credited with doing anything of significance. In a sense, Kurt Cobain was simply updating what AC/DC did with Back in Black on "Lithium" (though I misheard the chorus), and their music really i hard even to listen to.

It's hard to say if Cobains death made them more popular or not.Remember, they were huge and growing even bigger when he was alive.Perhaps had he lived they would have put out many more top sellers, perhaps not. We'll never know.I was not initially impressed with this band, but some of their material has grown on me.The fact that Cobain was not a "guitar hero" doesn't bother me.The man wrote some good songs. They are far from my favorite, but I don't find them to be terribly "over-rated" either.

I like a couple of their songs including 'Come As you Are,' but I feel music took a turn for the worse in the post Nirvana era. Thumbs down to grunge!

Their songs are ok, and Kurt was a pretty great singer, but unfortunatly, I'm more of a Foo Fighter fan.

SMELLS LIKE TEEN VOMIT
This third rate lot lucked out because they came along at a time when the airwaves were clogged with boring pop crap. They were fresh and infuential, but not particularly talented. Maybe if they'd known who Howlin' Wolf is?

I don't mean to be jerk, but I've always insisted that their legend is based on a shotgun blast...

The first popular "grunge" band but not a good band.

Nirvana are one of the most overrated bands of all time. They are called 'pioneers' and 'geniuses', yet Cobain and Novoselic can hardly play, and Grohl fared far better (at least music-wise) with his band Foo Fighters. Since Kobain's demise, Nirvana have received far too much media attention, and they will unfortunately be remembered as rock legends over far more talented and deserving bands. A terrible shame that a talentless and repetitive band should become so well known.

I find the attempts by some to deify Cobain to be somewhat amusing and totally uncalled for (hence, my reluctant second star). But from a musical perspective, there is no way you can consider Nirvana to be overrated; they injected life, energy and helped give new direction to a genre that had been sliding into a creative-abyss since the the turn-of-the 70's. The generation that proceded mine may never fully understand the appeal or the importance of this group, but I don't know very many folks under the age of forty who don't at least appreciate the contribution that Cobain & Co. made to music in general, and rock & roll in specific... I can still recall where I was and what I was doing when I first heard "Smells Like Teen Spirit" being played on the radio, and I honestly can't think of another song by any other band from that era in music that I can say that about. Furthermore, Kurt's death had no impact on my opinion of this group, as I had always thought rather highly of them from the very beginning. They were fresh. They were talented. They were influential. And they had the respect of critics and fellow musicians alike. And that counts for something.

I'd say so. Its not that they're a bad band, but Cobain's death has always brought out the hagiographers and their over-abundant praise.
