ItemImageThe Show: The Munsters The Cast: Fred Gwynne, Yvonne De Carlo, Al Lewis, Beverly Owen, Pat Priest, Butch Patrick Number Of Episodes: 70 Years It Aired: 1964 to 1966 Like the Munsters themselves, their car is a real character: An 18-foot-long monstrosity called the Koach. It is a mad combination of a hearse and a hot rod. This unique car star is born when Lily goes shopping for a new car and, torn between the two cars she likes most, has them combined into one vehicle. Although memorable, the car appears in only one episode, when Herman loses the Koach in a drag race, and Grandpa has to win it back by building a dragster of his own.

As a kid, I used to draw my own pictures of mortuary-based vehicles because of this Koach and Grandpa's roadster.

Designed and built by "King of the Kustomizers" George Barris, the Koach was made from three Model T bodies and is 18 feet long with a custom hand made frame. The brass radiator and fenders were also formed by hand and the interior is "blood red" velvet, while the outside is Gloss Black Pearl paint. It took 500 hours just to hand form the ornate steel scrollwork. The front end has a dropped axle, split radius rods and T springs. The car is powered by a 289 Ford Cobra engine which is built with Jahns high compression pistons, ten chrome plated Stromberg carburetors, an Isky (Iskendarian) camshaft and a set of Bobby Barr racing headers. Power is fed to a 4 speed manual transmission. The cost of production was approximately $18,000.00. Wow! It's too bad that the Munsters TV show was filmed in black and white because it cannot do justice to this fabulous custom. Color photographs of the car will set any auto enthusiast's heart racing to the point of getting a heart attack....but what a way to be driven to the morgue!

Pretty impressive ride, and nicely complemented by Grandpa's coffin dragster.
