The Bird Has Flown 4

A sort of cross between soul inflected rock and psychedelic rock. It has nothing to do with The Beatles' "Norwegian Wood" despite the similarity in titles, nor does it have anything to do with Jethro Tull's lyrics about " the bird has flown' in their track "The Teacher." This was the b-side of their flop 4th single 'Emmaretta." Deep Purple's third, eponymous album, like the band Pearls Before Swine, sported an album cover taken from the art of the great Hieronymous Bosch. Although it's their best early album,it only made it to #162 on the album charts, and the band at this time were apparently unable to get decent gigs in the all-important American market outside of the Pacific Northwest for some reason. Secretly, Blackmore, Lord, and Paice decided to get rid of Evans and Simper, and began holding sessions back in England with singer Ian Gillian and bassist Roger Glover from an also-ran pop act of the period called Episode Six, recording what would become the first release of the second lineup, a track called 'Hallelujah."
