Until a few years ago, I think few people realized the depth of this man's talent. Many of the production techniques and ideas for the I Love Lucy show came directly from his mind. He is also credited with the ability to bring out the best of Lucille Balls comedic abilities which, is easy to reference if you watch anything she did before or after that show. As good as he was in his role as Ricky Ricardo and as a musician and band leader; I think his real talent was his ability to do business. For instance, it is only due to his decision to put the show on film that it ever survived to entertain so many generations and become the American icon is has. In retrospect, I somehow suspect that Arnaz had such a keen business sense that the fact that he was nearly entirely eclipsed by his wife during those years was no accident.

It took a brave fight from his real life wife and co-star,but they won and Desi Arnaz paved the way for both Latinos in TV and movies as well as for "mixed marriages" being accepted by more people.

Molfan is right. Groundbreaking indeed. There was a time back in the 30s-50s when being Latin was considered "exotic." People of Hispanic ancestry were usually used to "spice up" movies but were rarely taken seriously as stars in their own right. Desi Arnaz helped to break that mold.

it was groundbreaking back in the early 50s to be the star of a show, and unheard of to play the husband across a "white person" even though they really were married in real life. Lucille Ball had to fight to get Desi Arnaz on I love Lucy. he sure had some success. not only in his early career as a singer and musician.but went on the co own a production company that was behind other successful tv shows in the 50s, 60s,
