Unfortunately for Luque and his teammates, that Series ring was for the infamous World Series in which 8 guys on the White Sox threw the Series. Luque, (1890-1957) of Cuban ancestry, played for several teams from the mid 1910's until the early 30's, but is best remembered as a Cincinatti Red, where he played the bulk of his career. Although Luque was 194-179 in his career, he was better than his record might indicate, as many of his years were spent toiling for mediocre or terrible teams. He had a great year in 1923: leading the N.L.with a 27-8 mark with a 1.93 ERA, which also led the league, and came in 2nd in strikeouts too. He would almost certainly have won the Cy Young award that year had there been one, and although his won-loss record never approached that again, he was an important member of a generally very solid Reds Rotation in the 20's, and was often at or near the top of important pitching categories. Was part of a legit championship team late in his career with the '33 Giants.
