From the submitter: "Find something in each employee (or perhaps a group but individual motivation holds stronger) and find out what naturally motivates them. Things such as money, and a few days off are nice for a bit but will not keep the employee going over the long term , plus as they get used to these rewards they expect more and more of it . But if you can make the job intrinsically motivating this will keep your employee much more likely to perform. Probably best to start off with a Management by Objectives system which includes the employee in setting their own goals."
