 | Drummond (60) 12/15/2006 | Gas prices are high and spending power low. It's certainly a factor, though it's not bad enough to have been a key issue.

 | VirileVagabond (37) 11/30/2006 | All things considered (e.g. the 2000 recession, natural disasters, and September 11 and the resulting conflicts), the economy is actually doing quite well. Some of the other comments have already noted several of the key indicators. Nevertheless, the Republicans didn't play this card (or at least not effectively) and the Democrats (and apparently the media) certainly didn't have an interest in playing up the economy either. Whether the voting public feels more financially secure is yet another matter. Nevertheless, the merits of any arguments related to artificially keeping wages higher than market forces would dictate are irrelevant to actual voting trends for the most part. In the final analysis, I won't say that the state of the economy had no bearing on the 2006 mid-term elections, but as things are actually relatively good but this issue wasn't really in play, I'm going with two stars.

 | abichara (63) 11/27/2006 | If you consider some of the traditional economic indicators; things like unemployment, home ownership rates and the such, you would say that they economy is going along very well, but those statistics underlie a large increase in the cost of living that's really hitting the lower and middle classes. The cost of different commodities in the market like health care and education continue to increase faster than inflation, meaning that salaries aren't going up with such costs. The broader economic performance didn't hurt the Republicans that much, it was those pocketbook issues that did.

 | luridlloyd (10) 11/20/2006 | I suppose the economy is pretty good now. I think peoples economic security is not. Consumer spending is fueling the "great" economy, but wages are not outpacing inflation. Home Equity Loans have kept the good times rolling. Now that many see their home values falling, and their Healthcare prices rising almost 20% a year, folks aren't feeling financially strong. This week Crude is down, but Gas is creeping up. Strange... We never know what Oil will cost.

 | disgust4PCness (19) 11/16/2006 | Please, there is no problem with the economy right now (11/15/06)...the only place that you hear about problems is with the mainstream media, and unfortunately, they "educate" and "inform" most of the masses in the US. The dems did their best to expose this myth, with the help of the MSM during the midterm elections, so it did have an effect on the outcome.

 | louiethe20th (79) 11/16/2006 | Lol. Highest Dow Jones in history, highest homeownership in history and unemployment less than 5 percent, not at all the reason!

 | CanadaSucks (50) 11/11/2006 | Housing bubble, job market sucks, we can't afford health care, and gas prices always go up after elections, real wages are losing power, this administration has spent money that doesn't exist, and you people want to talk about a strong economy? If things don't get better, I'm tutoring my kids in Chinese. . .

 | LanceRoxas (41) 11/10/2006 | Unemployment is at an all-time low of 4.4%, housing sales are still historically high, interest rates historically very low, inflation low, economic growth over the last 4 years has hovered around 3 or 4% GNP, economic mobility is high, first time home owner sales at an all-time high, business start ups are historically high, the DOW is at an all-time high over 12,000... the economy is cruising. Too bad liberals are to ignorant to give Bush some credit for that and too bad Bush failed to solidify a vision for victory in Iraq or he might be viewed in a much different light.
