Carlton was not a complete nerd, but did have some nerdy tendencies. Despite all of his efforts to fit in, he constantly embarassed himself and failed to win the appreciation of others. His drive to always be perfect in academic and financial pursuits was nerdy, but his tendency to brown nose is not. A nerd is somebody who will usually be successful in life, but ends up doing things their own way because they can't stand the inability of others to understand them. Carlton's tendency to try to grab on to the coattails of others in order to find success makes him a bit more yuppy than nerdy.

He was okay.

Alfonso Ribeiro is a very talented actor.  The "carlton" dance always cracks me up. 

"Carlton" may have been a nerd, but Alfonso is as smooth as silk. Have you seen the man dance?

I'm sorry, but I absolutely LOVE the character Carlton Banks. He is the ultimate man for me. You would never have a dull moment around someone like him as hes just so entertaining and funny and so sincere. His admiration for Tom Jones, the "carlton" dance, his strange dress sense and all things corny heightens his appeal. When he falls for a woman he truly falls for her and is so corny in the process of it all. His naive and vulnerabilities make him even more appealing. The person who invented this character either is this person, knows this person or is related to this person as the character of Carlton Banks is just pure genuis.

Carlton was a tragic nerd prototype, but he was at least funny enough to keep up.
