I didn't see Daria as a nerd. A nerd to me is a person who may be socially awkward despite their best attempts to fit in, and usually has a very focused passion or knowledge about a subject that others might overlook. It wasn't that Daria couldn't fit in if she wanted, its that she tried not to. She was a character that silently lashed out at conformity. She is a hard character to label, and nerd would not be my first choice.

Her sarcastic and pessimistic personality balance out well with her intellect. She's not quite the same type of artist as Jane, but she still has an artist vibe to her. How someone can be such an extreme opposite to their sibling is beyond me, but when it comes down to it all Daria has a big heart. She just doesn't show it as often as others do. Then again I don't blame her with the family she has.
