The largest public transit system in Canada. Services both downtown and the Greater Toronto Area. Includes a subway system, buses and , anachronistically, a large street car or "trolley" system. (Add picture)

The service levels are terrific on the subway. Trains come every two minutes or less in both directions at rush hour, or every 5 minutes or less at any other time. Trains have some seats facing towards the front/back of the train, which is a popular configuration many other cities have abandoned. Most trains are also air conditioned.. The downside is that the subway system is that it's not very extensive, but serves downtown well. Forget about taking it to the airport. It is the most popular part of the system for commuters. Streetcars are comfortable and ride smoothly. Many routes have issues with schedules and spacing, however. But routes like Spadina are great for all day frequencies of ten minutes or less. The system is getting upgraded and expanded, so the future is bright. The bus system is extensive, but stops are frequently placed, slowing commutes considerably. Some express routes are offered, which can be convenient. With around 100-120 kilometres of subway track, upgraded streetcar routes, and a fare card this would be the great system that the city needs. It's not there yet, and government appears to be making only small steps like minor subway extensions to the outer suburbs and on-street LRT lines. Larger steps are needed.

A fair transit system but not without it's quirks. Fares are a little pricey compared to U.S. transit systems but the service is fairly reliable. Unfortunately, the TTC is crippled by a bloated, inefficient union that is largely responsible for the high prices of fares. Moreover, it's the union that prevents the subway from running 24hrs, the demand is there but none of the lifers at the TTC want to work the hours. Also, despite years of clamoring, there is STILL no subway or LRT link to the airport (which is hells half-acre away from downtown). You can either take the bus - and transfer sixty times - to arrive downtown 3-4 hours later or get gouged by the airport limos for $50 or $60 bucks. Compare this to London where I took the tube from Heathrow to downtown in just over twenty minutes. Toronto desperately wants to be considered in the same league as New York, they need to tighten up their bush league transit system to even begin to compare.
