Ace may not be among the top 5 or so, but most people who rate him do so based upon his work with KISS. Ace's best stuff was when he started his own band,"Frehleys Comet". On the album "Trouble Walkin" which is an outstanding album, you can see he has far more talent than what was displayed with KISS. Paul and Gene decided what KISS would sound like and Ace was limited in what he could do at the time. Drugs also limited the amount of music he put out after KISS, but if his head had been on straight, he no dougbt would have opened more eyes to his real ability.

This guy just gets no credit whatsoever, and he is the most talented member of Kiss, besides Eric Singer, and the late Eric Carr.Ace just had some great licks, and chops. His style was so good.Just check out songs like,Cold Gin,She,Parasite,Into The Void,Psycho Circus,Deuce, etc.

The kind of people who think this worthless hack is a great guitarist are the same kinds who think Budweiser is great beer or MacDonalds is fine dining. By which I mean they are eager victims of good marketing, and have neither taste, talent, nor the ability to think for themselves.

Frehley is no better than average, musically or technically.

He could wear makeup like a hot damn though.

And this despite the ravings of some sycophants on here, many of whom are damn quick with a superlative.

Ace Frehley is one of the most influential guitarist of the 1970's from Kiss. He didn't change the way guitar players played like Eddie Van Halen, but he sure made people want to play the guitar.I like the comment that he influenced many "13 year old boys", I know because most guitarists influence 40 year old men, brilliant obsevation. Lenny Kravitz, Slash, Dimebag Darrel, Scott Ian and many more have said that they wouldn't even have played guitar if it wasn't for Ace Frehley, that shows how important and influential Ace Frehley was. It is absolutely idiotic to say that those guys were teenagers when Ace influenced them, what other guitarist out there influenced someone to play guitar in their twenties, that went on to become famous in the music industry? When a guitarist influences someone to play guitar, that person usually is a teenager, HELLO! So keep on saying he influenced teenagers and show how foolish you really are.

Even Esteban couldn't help this six string hack. Is directly responsible for thousands of young wannabe musicians taking up percusion instruments. Can now be seen performing some of his best axe work...on a Dunkin' Donuts commercial. Unfortunately as soon as this gig ends, he's back to doing what he does best, playing folk songs at gay bars and NAMBLA conventions.

Not bad, but not great - All his solos sound exactly the same, and arn't very complex, but he does play them well

Probably the most underated guitarist of all time. Great guitarists don't strictly stand upon technical ability alone but also by melody, structure (basic when called for) & natural ability. Ace shines as probably one of the best melodic soloists in rock. Listen to Alive I & his solo album from 1978... blistering solos coupled with tasteful & clever licks as well. Standout track has to be Shock Me live from Alive II.

He is a very mediocre guitarist, in terms of skill; some of his solos (like Cobain) are easier to play than the simplest riffs of even a slightly sophisticated guitarist like Slash or Hammett. I will admit that his 'gritty' licks are part of what made KISS so amazingly popular, so you have to give him some credit...

Ace played with flash and balls. But, ultimately, Ace was a one-trick pony. Nobody does that trick better, though.

Influential? Yes. Great? Depends on who you're talking to. Any good musically? Only fair, really. I knew in JR high, (when KISS broke big), that Ace was only adequate on guitar. I still liked KISS, and Ace. But I can quickly rattle off the top of my head at least 50 guitarists who are in all ways superior to Ace. Still like old KISS music though.

I gave him a 3. He influenced as many kids to pick up the guitar as any other guitarist in history. Decent chops (for a rock guitarist) and style.

A great sounding player who led many to the Kiss Army.Possessed a natural feel for the instrument although not an overwhelming technician

I'll give him 2 stars for his influence on millions of 13 year old boys, but as far as ability goes - he just doesn't stand up to most of the others on this list.
