 | abichara (67) 12/15/2006 | Of course not. Even Nixon himself admitted in his autobiography that at the end of the day, he gave his enemies the sword to kill him. That he had enemies was certainly true. The beginning of his career was defined by an assault on the modern liberal establishment, through his investigation of Alger Hiss, who was not indicted for being a communist, but rather for perjury. It was no conspiracy, it was just Nixon ineptly playing himself into his enemies hands.

 | Drummond (60) 12/14/2006 | I still hear this. Back when I was a kid, I had friends whose father believed that his apology was generated by splicing comments together - and that he had just given up so didn't challenge what was being reported.
The later theories were nowhere near as grandios, and actually the modern conservative tactic is to say it was "no big deal."
