Might have.

When I worked politics, any responsible staffer would have scooped enemy briefing notes if he had half a chance....

The game is a blood sport, folks. Winning isn't everything in politics, its the only thing.

Stole? Like in a "Watergate-style" break-in? How exciting. If the "Reagan Campaign" stole anything from the "Carter Campaign" it says much more about the Carter group than anything else, as if we needed more verification of that. It also says a mouthful about anyone who still considers this a viable conspiracy theory, more like an opportunity for a political whinefest. The guy lost. He ran on his record and he lost. The American People spoke, just as they did in November, 2006.

Yes, Jimmy Carter's briefing notes were stolen by the Reagan campaign in 1980, but at that point in the campaign, the results were already a foregone conclusion. Carter was already weighed down by the Iranian hostage crisis and the weak economy. He wasn't seen as up to the task, even though some of his policies were remarkably forward looking, especially concerning the environment, (even though many viewed his answer to the energy crisis as "put on your sweaters"). The problem for him was more political: Carter was seen as "gloom and doom" and Ronald Reagan was somewhat more positive. Reagan sealed the deal when, during that same debate, he posed the question: are you better off today than you were 4 years ago. Many candidates ask that same question, but none with the poignancy and political relevance that Reagan did. It seems like the American people answered accordingly...

Stealing a moron's notes isn't much of a crime.

Yea it looks like William Casey stole the debate briefing notes, however Jimmy Carter would have still loss the election and history has proved this man was a bad president and has no idea about what the hell goes on in this world!
Carters recent statements that he likens Israel and the Palestinians to South African apartheid is ridiculous and just flat out wrong.

No falsehood here. It happened. And nobody was ever prosecuted.
