 | irishgit (160) 08/21/2008 | True, except its not a conspiracy. It was done openly, with the usual motivations of arming an "ally" and making a substantial profit.

 | James76255 (25) 08/08/2008 | It's a little tough to rank because it's true but it's not a conspiracy. It happened openly and, at the time the weapons were sold, nobody had a problem with it. If there is a conspiracy to it it's the fact that some people want everyone to forget why the weapons were sold.
Iraq was at war with Iran at the time and every civilized nation in the world wanted Iraq to win that war. It was a case of a common enemy making strange allies, as often happens. What I find strange is people having such a problem with an arms deal that was done openly, yet in later years when France and Russia made deals with Hussein under the table in violation of international law, those same people don't seem to have a problem with it.

 | Itz Me Gayle62 (0) 08/03/2008 | We trained and armed bin laden and his buddies to battle the Russians... wouldn't surprise me to see some sort of "arms for oil" arrangement come to light.

 | FranksWildYears (63) 02/20/2007 | The US supported Iraq during its war with Iran and funded the Taliban and Bin Laden during Afghanistan's war with the Soviet Union. It suited their need to manipulate the outcome of international events at that time. Decades later the US showed their thanks to both groups by invading and ousting their former allies. Some friend, eh?

 | Wavebacker (27) 02/19/2007 | True. We sold it ot Iraq in their war vs Iran back when Iran was the bad guy and Iraq ( and Hussein) were on our side.

 | daedalus (34) 12/16/2006 | We certainly did sell him plenty of weapons, but so did Britain and France. So I guess I need an idea of what "much" is to answer. Without a clear definition though I would say, yes, the U.S. did sell Hussein much of his weapons.

 | CanadaSucks (51) 12/15/2006 | One star for the ridiculous "conspiracy" listing. . .there is more than a kernel of truth to this statement. . .one of the many conflicting and dim-bulb foreign policy moves that didn't work out for Washington- a city that (more and more) seems so removed from reality. . .

 | abichara (67) 12/14/2006 | We certainly sold weapons to Saddam Hussein's regime. He was at the time seen as a secularist regime going up against a fundamentalist Iranian state. During the Iran-Iraq War, we did sell weapons to both sides, but much more to Iraq. We built up Saddam Hussein, then we cut him down.
