On the other hand if we put the "effete" Ivy League flunkies who infested the Agency, in the 1950's and 1960's, in charge of the job to snuff out Castro, no wonder he is still alive.

 | edt4 (99) 02/01/2007 | I think one of the attempts involved an exploding seashell; another involved a poisoned cigar. Even better (or worse, depending on your point of view) were the attempts to "discredit" Castro...exposing him to a powder that would make his beard fall out (and humiliate him in front of Raoul and Che Guevara, I guess); or giving him an LSD-like drug so he would ramble incoherently during one of his speeches that usually lasted for several hours...these were just 2 of the brain-storms the CIA, in coordination with the Mafia (specifically, Chicago boss Sam Giancana and Florida's Santo Trafficante), came up with. Sounds like a bad "Get Smart" episode, but it's true, sad to say. The historic lesson of all this cloak-and-dagger intrigue and skullduggery? That both the CIA and the Mafia were much more incompetent than America's popular mythology would have it.

 | FranksWildYears (48) 02/01/2007 | The creativity of the CIA hit an all time peak when they tried to do in Castro by employing an old Vaudeville routine, the exploding cigar.

 | abichara (60) 12/15/2006 | The CIA did attempt to assassinate Castro on various occasions during the 1960's. Some of the plots were rather creative: one was to poison Fidel's diving suit, another was to give him a poision cigar that would make his ubiquitous beard fall out. Another one involved an exploding cigar that would permanently finish him off. But Castro survived, and is today the 2nd longest living world leader, ironically enough considering the amount of people wanting him dead!! It is old age that will ultimately claim his life.
