Actually a member of the weasel family and by far the largest member of the species weighing in at 6 to 7,000 lbs and standing 24 feet tall. They eat scrap iron and silk but in captivity prefer Coca-Cola and french fries.

Made cute recently by Coke commercials, they are hardly cute. They are aggressive beasts. Sadly these powerfull creatures are on the verge of extinction.

I think if I could own any kind of an exotic animal, this would be second in line. I love their pure white coat that blends in with the ice and snow, and they are beautiful bears.

They're pretty and look cuddly...but they really aren't. Don't try to hug a polar bear, please.

These are the bears that are wonderful swimmers and can stay underwater for long periods of time and that can adapt very easily should the myth of global warming threaten them. If they leave the 2% area that is melting they will easily find a new home in the other 98% that is actually gaining more snow and ice mass each year.

These are like The WASPS of the ursine world, whiter than white bears that can't dance and get pissed if you make fun of The Eagles ...

I once had a client in Churchill, Manitoba which is on the polar bear migration route. The Canadian Army parks APCs on street corners so pedestrians have a place to shelter from the things. I remember seeing a group of three amble up the street under my hotel room window, absolutely fearless. A terrifying predator.

Beautiful powerfull animals, its to bad man seems to alway stumble into its natural habitat.

Irishgit notes the problem that Churchill, Manitoba has with the polars. The problem is the garbage dumps on the edge of town. The bears congregate on the shore of Hudson's Bay waiting for the freeze. Since they don't have much to do, they scout around Churchil and the dump. They pick off a lot of pets and are a real danger. I had Canadian authorities tell me in Manitoba that the worst offending bears are often trapped or tranquilized or whatever and hauled hundres of miles and dumped off. In a few weeks they are back. They are tagged for tracking purposes. They are magnificent but extremely dangerous animals. They are the only bear that will hunt man for its food. The male can way in at 1000 or more pounds. A big one weighed in over 1750 pounds! They are also very fast runners and can easily run down a human. What is sad is that global warming will probably cause this bear's extinction.

It's true what git says about Churchill, Manitoba. They've even got these big "humane mousetraps" for them but have a real problem with the winos staggering into them and getting trapped. I think all bears can swim, but this one is especially strong. I saw them over 100km out in Hudsons Bay. Thing that surprised me the most is that they are definitely not white. More of a french vanilla kind of colour.

Though they are mean, they're still cute.
scarletfeather 10/09/2004
I don't care if they're mean, tboneya, I still think they're adorable, lol. Back in my younger days, I had a stuffed polar bear that I dubbed Barnabas and dressed in tutus and legwarmers. When it was warm, I would put him in a bathing suit. He was a very unusual bear. He had a smart mouth too.
