Jim Rice was one of the most feared power hitters of his time. He might have hit 500 homeruns in his career, if his vision had not diminished over his last five or so seasons and that would have definitely put him in the Hall of Fame. Jim was a league MVP, homerun champion and a solid left fielder. Jim Rice is a All-Time Red Sox great and deserves to be in the Baseball Hall of Fame, it is a travesty that he is not all ready.

Jim did it all- without drugs. His skils just faded fast after 35- but he still put up some incredible years and belongs in the Hall of Fame over some today with questionable issues.

I like this guy a lot, and I would put him among the best the Sox ever had but I can't go 5 stars. His fielding was mediocre to brutal, and he tended to be the "designated rally killer", striking out in the clutch or grounding into double plays. In addition, as a left fielder on the Sox, he falls below Williams and Yaz. In some ways he's similar to Ramirez, except Ramirez is by far the better hitter.

Rice had some flaws: he was never better than an ok fielder, struck out a lot, and seemingly grounded into double plays about every 3 times up. However, at his best in the late 70's, when he was one of the best hitters in the game, he was a truly fearsome hitter and a really, really strong guy. Fine years in '83 and '86, though he was terrible from 87-89. Surly in his younger days, though he's mellowed out considerably, and is a pretty good tv analyst. As a Red Sox, a 5, as an all time left fielder or player a 4.
