A Hall of Famer, one of the greatest pre- World War 2 third basemen in the game's history, and the best third baseman in baseball from about 1895 until about 1905. Collins had come from the Boston Braves, where he was a star, and was also the first Red Sox manager, leading them to pennants in '03 and '04, and the first Series title in the former year. He could hit well, especially for a third baseman back then, as it was much more of a fielder's than a hitter's position. He was an innovative and intelligent player at third defensively. Collins played a couple of years at the end of his career with the Philadelphia A's, and was replaced by a guy that I'd consider to be the best all- around major third league baseman of the entire first half of the 20th century, the great Frank "Home Run" Baker.
