At his peak, before the injuries, he was without a doubt the best hitting Red Sox shortstop of all time if considering peak performance, with Cronin a fairly distant second I would guess. Injuries have made him just another good but not great player since, though he had a good comeback year with L.A. this season. As irishgit alludes to, he had a rather prickly demeanor, especially toward the end 3.5

Despite his early promise and the strong start to his career, when he was regularly touted as one of the top three shortstops in the game (the others being Jeter and Rodriguez) injuries dimmed his star. Never a particularly personable man, who seemed to shun the spotlight, he became downright sullen as time went on, and unfortunately may wind up being best remembered as the linch pin of the trade that brought Roberts, Cabrera and Mientkiewicz to the eventual Series winning Sox
