I think he only deserves 3 stars as a Sox pitcher, but I'll give him the 4th for his 2004 heroics, and his undeniable value in the clubhouse to that team.

Schilling had some good years with Philadelphia, though you never quite knew what you were gonna get because he was pretty inconsistent. Actually, his peak years were some great ones with Arizona- that one- two punch of Schilling and Johnson has to be the best one two starting pitcher punch in recent years. Aside from his 2004 heroics and the fine season he had that year, there's no apparent reason to rate him too high on this list. I agree with canadasucks' point: free agency is a mixed bag overall. While it would be pretty boring in some ways to have the same crew year after year, on the other hand it's too bad that very few guys are left who one would associate with just one club. It used to be, even when I was a kid and free agency was there, that you thought of Brett as a Royal, Schmidt as a Phillie, Bench as a Red, and so on... it seems like all time teams would be naturally weighted toward players of the pre- free agency period, especially for the clubs that have been in the same place for a really long time.

Nowhere near as smart as he thinks he is. . .certainly not a lot of time with the Sox. . .but a serious big-time money pitcher with nerves of steel has to be placed somewhere on the all-time Sox list. . .besides, the era of free agency does tend to wreck havoc with our 'all time' team lists anyhow. . .

Schilling doesn't have a lot of time with the Red Sox, but he gets special consideration for pitching for their World Series team.
