Despite his amazing stick- his glove is an afterthought and his concentration is sorely lacking. . .Manny plays and hustles when he feels like it- 3 stars for god-given talent with zero brains. . .

Manny's fielding and sometimes his baserunning can be, to put it mildly, an adventure- and his attitude is childish and sometimes bizarre. That being said, he's a great hitter, a frightening presence at the plate and one of the most fearsome Red Sox hitters ever. I can't go to a 5, and some of his best years of course were in Cleveland, but at least he ain't dull!

Whatever his limitations in the outfield (and they are legion) may be, this guy is a fearsome hitter, one of the greatest in Sox history. I'm well aware that he can be a little less than attentive when out in front of the Monster, but the Sox have a history of less than stellar defensive left fielders who can jack the ball onto Lansdowne. One small comment about his defense though. The guy has an arm, perhaps the best gun on an active left-fielder in baseball. The question is always whether he'll throw to the right base. At the plate though, it is abundantly clear what Ramirez puts on the uniform for. One half of the greatest power hitting tandem in Sox history (with Ortiz)he is a disciplined hitter, particularly hard to fool in the clutch. Not much speed, and takes a fair bit of heat for not always running out ground ball outs or showing much hustle. If you're looking for a Pete Rose clone, this ain't your guy, but he's a damn intriguing and frequently exciting player. In my opinion, the 3rd best Sox left fielder. Behind Williams and Yaz, and ahead of Rice.
