Valle de Bravo is one of the coolest towns that I´ve been to in Mexico. Located about 3 hours from Mexico City, Valle de Bravo is a mountain town set next to a gorgeous lake. Like many colonial Mexican towns, narrow cobble stoned steets lead up to a central zocalo. There are plenty of stores, restaurants, and bars that line the labyrintine streets, and exploring by foot is much easier than exploring by car. But what makes Valle De Bravo so special is its lake. The lake is amazingly clean, and is a deep dark blue. It´s the cleanest natural attraction that I´ve seen in Mexico, and it´s clear that the locals really value it. You can hire a boat at the embarcadero, and putter around to check out the mansions that make up some of the more exclusive neighborhoods, and see the waterfalls trickling down from the mountains. About 20KM from town there is a major monarch butterfly sanctuary. Millions of butterflies migrate here from North America, and gather in a 75 square foot sanctuary. It´s a tough hour long hike up hill to see it (you can also go by horse), but its totally worth it. The sky and trees are absolutely teeming with beautiful monarch butterflies, and all you here is the rustle of their wings... it´s really a special place.
