I won't dispute that James Cameron directs films that have entertainment value, but there really isn't much beyond the wiz, bang, bells and whistles. I will say that "The Terminator" (1984) was his best, but "Aliens" (1986) lacked the suspense of the original and "Titanic" (1997) was ruined by the overacting and piss-poor screenplay. "The Abyss" (1989) and "True Lies" (1994) were okay, but "Terminator 2" (1991) relied too heavily on special effects, as most of his movies do. The bottom line is that Cameron is a bit of a one trick pony, and his rating suffers as a result. James Cameron was born August 16, 1954 in Kapuskasing, Ontario.

A successful and dependable maker of macho crap.

Probably the most overrated director on the list.

I don't think the direction of 'Titanic' is its weakness. For me it's the storyline and the two leads for which Cameron has to take the blame. That done, I can't fault any of his films esp 'The Abyss' which is very underrated. And 'True lies, the 'Terminator' films and 'Aliens' are the last word in on-screen excitement.

James Cameron is a very, very talented director and screenwriter. As much as I disliked the plot of "Titanic", the special effects and directing were fantastic. Let's not forget about "True Lies", "The Terminator", "T2", "Aliens", and "The Abyss". I think I'm on safe ground in saying that Cameron is one of the most talented directors of our time.

You know. I enjoyed Titanic but i don't think that this is enough to classify him into a steriotypical catigory which we call a Fantastic director. I say he is good, but not great. But he has many movies he has under his belt that i love to watch such as "True Lies" "The Terminator" and it's sequals and of course the abbyss, which was a major contribution into the world of CGI. James Camron is good. But not great

This is his overall rating representing the early better work and the movies from after his ego got all swole up. "King of the world", my Aunt Fanny.

I do love the films that he has done, such as 'Aliens' T1 & 2, Singles and Strange Days and many others. But I have one major problem with him, his scriptwriting. Whenever he does the screenplay for the film, it just doesn't quite hit that spot. I thought the script to Titanic was appallingly bad, it had some good lines in it, but overall it made me cringe. The camerawork, photography and SFX are at a very high standard, one the screenplay is sorted out, he'll be outstanding.

yes when considering james cameron you must dig further than 4 years into your memory. when it comes to his speciality, he's always had an almost impeccable sense of pacing and progression. and most of his movies do reach a certain level of intelligence, as far as action movies go. entertainment is his art, and he's good at it. but i do agree with thorne - i still find titanic watchable for it's sets, props, effects, cinematography and overall grandure.

Maybe it's the Titanic backlash getting the better of me, but I felt myself itching to give Cameron just two or three stars. Then, after a deep breath, I calmly reminded myself that I enjoyed "True Lies," both "Terminator" movies, "The Abyss," and "Aliens." Not exactly a list of intellectually stimulating masterpieces, but quite a few good movies nonetheless. Cameron may specialize in harmless, crowd-pleasing, popcorn movies, but what he does he does well.

James Cameron has a great talent for knowing what the audience wants. His style is classic and his visual flair is very precise and clean cut. Titanic, no matter how much I say I didn't like it, was a a spectacle to behold and very fine tuned. He likes to put his heart in front of the brain. I might not love all his films, but he is great at what he does as a director. That is what we are rateing right? The director, not his films. Very fine director.
