Aníbal Acevedo Vilá was elected Governor of Puerto Rico in 2004 holding the seat for the Popular Democrats. Acevedo's margin of victory was just 3,566 votes and was marred by a controversy that involved appeals to the United States federal courts. Acevedo is the first elected governor born after the adoption of the Constitution of Puerto Rico.
