Prior to his election, Governor Huntsman served as a White House Staff Assistant in the Reagan Administration.

Governor Huntsman also formerly served his country as a U.S. Ambassador to Singapore in the administration of President George H.W. Bush and as a trade minister to East Asia in the George W. Bush Administration. Huntsman speaks fluent Standard Mandarin Chinese.

He defeated interim Governor Olean S. Walker (R) for the Republican nomination. She had assumed the office of Governor of the State of Utah after former governor Mike Leavitt resigned his office to serve as Administrator of the EPA in Washington, D.C.
