We had two cats, Angus and Annie. I have posted some Angus videos so some of you might have seen him. Both are gone now and Martha and I don't have the heart to replace them.

Annie would go quietly into a crate but Angus was absolutely violent when he had to go to the vet. He was big and strong and that was really a chore.

Yeah. But good luck trying to get one of the sonsabitches in "their" crate. The last cat I had the misfortune to own would rip a new asshole in anyone trying to get him in the pet carrier for a trip to the vet. And taking him without being crated wasn't an option because he would bite and claw anyone holding him and leap at the driver's head.

Eventually, urban coyotes got the nasty bastard, or so we believed. In my opinion it must have been some tough motherfucker of a coyote who killed that prick of a cat.

yes, cats can go in  a crate. if you can get them in the crate. the cats we had despised their crate and let us know that big time. then they would holler for most of the trip. and they could anicipate when they were going in the crate. so lots of luck.

My friend gave his cat that was wired a little funny a mild sedative on the advice of a vet for a cross country drive from Pennsylvania to Arizona about five years ago. It didn't work quite the way it was supposed to. According to my friend, the cat kinda sat there stoned and meowing for the first few hundred miles...

Oh, I don't know. Unless they're babies, I wouldn't try to pick up a lion or a tiger. It would be a real mistake. They may pick us up first!

Yes, this opinion is one of the easiest to dismiss, subsequently one that dog owners frequently try to shoot down. If any of you have a cat that is claustrophobic, you know the never ending meow that they throw-up.

I think dogs are vastly more portable, given the whole leash thing. My cat would kick my ass if I tried to take him for a walk.

Getting one to go into a crate, that's a different story alltogether.

I volunteer at a local Humane Society and have put more cats into cages or into crates and boxes (yep, those cardboard things with the holes in them like from the pet store) for adoptive owners than I can count. Very, very rarely have I had an uncooperative cat to the point where it took more than one person to do the job or resulted in a bandaid. In my case, that is the exception, not the norm. Maybe I'm just lucky.

Like hell they are! Most cat owners will likely disagree with this. While there are some cats that are docile, it usually takes quite an effort to fit a small cat into even a large crate (for, inevitably, the cat's limbs will stretch just beyond whatever the size of the opening is). Working at a vet's clinic for some time, we've had quite a few calls to reschedule because the owner couldn't get the cat in the carrier (and occasionally had to tend to their wounds after trying to get the cat in there). A good two-person way of getting a cat in a carrier would be to put the carrier on its end, opening up; one person lifts the cat up, holding under its forearms while the second person tucks the hind legs and tail into the opening while the first person slowly lowers the cat into the carrier. Person two should quickly close the gate as soon as possible. Another way would be to undo the crate's top from the bottom, put the cat on the bottom half while the second person hovers with the top half, and smoothly put the top half on the bottom half while the first person draws their hands away. The nuts and bolts can be reapplied at that time.

Portable sized? Yes. Portable? No. My cats have all fought like, well, hellcats, before I could get them into a crate. And, as I don't believe in declawing, that has been on occasion a painful experience. My dog jumps right into the back of my truck.

My dogs don't get in a car unless they're in a crate. You just need to make sure you have one that fits the dog.
