In his early years, Blass fell off the mound with every pitch. He sometimes fell to the ground. Naturally he couldn't make a play on anything. By midcareer he had adjusted and remained a good fielder to the end. At the end he was struck by the "steve blass disease." Basically he was terrified to play. He lasted only 1 season in that state.

Steve Blass just lost the ability to pitch in 1972. Fielding was the least of his worries.
