Rich Gedman 5

Big and slow, and possessed of an astonishing lack of agility. Could hit a ton, for a few seasons at least which is probably why he could hold a job.

Didn't have much of an arm, at least as far as accuracy goes, and was always among the worst catchers for passed balls and caught stealing percentage during his career.

Gedman was a good hitter for a catcher for a while, but an awfully slow guy even for a backstop and an aesthetic disaster at fielding- not to get too pompous, but catching at its best, when done by a Bench or Ivan Rodriguez, is an art form. I always suspected that maybe part of the reason he was their everyday catcher for some time is because he was a local kid from Worcester, which is about 40 miles west of Boston. Think of Gedman as the inverse Ron Karkovice, who was a hell of a defensive catcher but a weak hitter for average though he had some power.
