Unlike most of these guys, he wasn't much offensively, just bringing a bit of power and speed to the table. I never understood how he kept a starting job at one of the most demanding defensive positions (shortstop). I don't think Ramirez ever saw a ball he couldn't bobble, overthrow, throw to the wrong base, or just not get to. Added to this impressive set of skills, he sometimes seemed to forget how many outs there were, where the runners were, and what the game situation was. I don't recall ever seeing a worse fielding regular shortstop.

Ramirez, who was Atlanta's shortstop for much of the 80's, was a dreadful fielder, with 5 straight seasons of 30 or more errors from 1981 ( the strike year to boot) -1985, plus another 30 error season in 1989 with Houston. Ramirez had some speed and a bit of pop in his bat, but not nearly enough to compensate for his fielding inadequacies.
