American Dynasty is less conspiracy minded than other books on the Bush family, and probably the best of the lot. The history of the Bush dynasty provides a rare glimpse at the rise of a typical WASP elite family: origins in Midwestern manufacturing, rise to New York and banking/finance, finally Connecticut and national politics. The Bushes survive into the 21st Century by using the 'Yankee carpetbagger' strategy: they relocate to Texas, branch out into oil and re-brand themselves as Sunbelt politicians. Continuities remain: the Bushes have always had close links to foreign elites (formerly British and German, now Mexican and Saudi). They have repeatedly used government power and contacts to increase their private fortunes, and have always been inclined towards policies benefiting the wealthy (under Dubya these are carefully camouflaged by pseudo-populist rhetoric). American Dynasty is an interesting book, but it fails to explain why 'W' has followed such reckless policies, compared to his dynastic predecessors.

Books like this and the public in general has been brainwashed by the media. The media is an extention of the liberal dems. The real reason the dem/media hate GW is because he is a christian. The world hates christians. The truth is GW is courageous and right on course in protecting America which is his job.

This is the most objective and thoroughly documented account of the rise of the Bush family through the unholy alliance of the Bush and Walker clans, who combined long experience with the CIA with relentless war profiteering (including selling weapons to Hitler). Unlike the other exposes of this subject, Phillips thoughtfully avoids recourse to conspiracy theories. Also has wider implications for understanding how we've come to elect dynasties to office. This is a call for a return to "republicanism with a small 'r'," as Phillips puts it -- that is, democratic government by laws rather than by men.
