 | zuchinibut (40) 09/01/2008 | Camille was definitely one of the stronger hurricanes to make landfall in the United States and caused a lot of damage from the Missippi delta, across the south, and up through Virginia. It caused a loss of life of over 100 people, despite avoiding urban areas. It would probably have been a more expensive and deadlier disaster if it landed today.

 | kipprabbit (0) 07/31/2006 | thedude25: i think you are probably referring to Hurricane Gilbert (1988); Gordon was the name that replaced Gilbert on the list; but yes, Gilbert's winds gusted well over 200mph, and sustained at landfall were 170 mph on Yucatan
as for Camille, this is probably the strongest hurricane ever to hit the Gulf Coast ("probably" because 100% accurate records do not go back before 1851)--pressure 909mb, winds an incredible 190 mph; the entire Mississippi delta was under water, and although much of the damage occured along the coast, there was also massive flooding in Virginia two days after landfall, with 112 deaths there of 256 total in U.S. (259 counting the three in Cuba)

 | thedude25 (3) 04/14/2005 | Worst hurricane in recorded history, though hurricane Gordon hade higher winds, 240 mph gusts, it did not hit land. If Camille were to hit land today, it would do serious damage and probably kill many people.

 | J3W (0) 02/28/2005 | Far and away the worst Hurricane in US history.
Sustained winds at 200, with gusts in Pass Christian that broke the wind meter that went to 230 MPH.
28' Storm Surge- there is just no comparison to this storm.
It was one of those Once In A Century storms that has no peer.
