 | zuchinibut (41) 09/01/2008 | Hugo was a category 5 hurricane, but probably ranks a notch below Katrina. At the time, 1989, it was one of the worst Hurricanes to hit the United States. It caused massive damage to the Carolinas and claimed about 35 American lives. Many people were left homeless and much of the area was without power for weeks. In addition to the damage in the United States, it also wreaked havoc in the Caribbean. Many small islands there faced worse damage than what hit the US, and of course they had less resources to deal with it.
