I saw it when it first came out, and I haven't seen it since. My memory of it is not positive. I remember it as being filled with stereotypical characters and lurid Hollywood-style melodrama. I think Sean Penn is one of the best actors currently working in America, but I didn't think so when I saw this. In fairness, I probably should watch it again to determine if my initial impression of it was valid. Still, there are so many good movies out there that I have yet to see...why waste the finite hours of my life on a cinematic effort that I thought was pretty dismal when it was released?
