 | Vudija (92) 02/08/2007 | This earthquake was significant in other ways. At the time, scientests were trying to prove the existence of "Megatsunamis". Through events during this particular quake, scientests finally proved that they could indeed happen. This information is another that contradicts Donovan's original comment. Wikipedia claims this quake was a magnitude of only 7.7, rather than 8.3. Either way, it was a substantial quake.
From wikipedia:
"On July 10, 1958 the speculation was confirmed, following a nearby earthquake of magnitude 7.7, which generated a landslide that sent water surging across Lituya Bay. The landslide hit the water fast enough to shoot water up the opposite bay to a height of 524 meters. A wave with initial heights of about 100 meters traveled along the bay, and flowed over the entrance to the bay with a height of about 30 meters."
