Are you sure that was Zell Miller up there and not Bogart in The Caine Mutiny? Whoever, or whatever that was, was a bit paranoid, shrill, and louder than Motorhead to the occupants of a nursing home would be.

Zell on Earth. He was so offensive even Mrs. Bush was put off by him. Seems to have burned all his bridges and fallen off into obscurity since the Republicans no longer have any use for him. A tragic ending to a long Dixiecrat career.

Zell Miller managed to even surprise and frighten many undecided voters away from voting for Bush in the last election. His rabid tone and attacks on the Democratic Party left many wondering if Former Gov. Miller has entered senility, or become one of the old duelists. Miller has become one of the more zealous public officials, and has questionable motives. Its even been alleged that a few days after Chris Matthews interview, Zell sent a bunch of letters to MSNBC demanding that Chris come to Georgia for a duel... Zell symbolizes the old democrats, even the old republicans, the ones who were probably in favor of discriminatory practices, hate-mongering, and violence. Just because a person is willing to stick to their cause until death doesn't make them a hero. Did racism and mass genocide make Hitler a hero? No. Did racism make Stromm Thurmond a hero? ...somewhat. Did hateful rhetoric make Zell and Thurmond adored by the south? Without a question, yes. Unfortunately, this man is a disgrace to America as a whole. You can admire him for his guts or passion...but in the end, this guy is pretty much a joke. Then again, few Americans actually are willing to research their topic before putting their own two cents in. Present company included.

I agree with middlefinger. The Republicans can have him.

Made about as much sense as the US going into war against Iraq. Spoke with a whole lot of venom and firepower, but came off as a whining, whimpering, complaining good ole boy. However...whatever...if the Republicans want him, they can have his country ass!

Zig Zag Zell, the 21st Century political equivalent of Edgar Bergen, master of speaking out of both sides of his mouth, another phony politico from that wasteland known as the American South who has all the loyalty and heft of a hungry mosquito. Interesting that he was a major Democratic cheerleader last time around, but a big-time purveyor of unsubstantiated trash regarding John Kerry in 2004. If he spoke so well about the Democratic hopeful in the past and denigrated him so severely at the GOP convention, which of these takes are we supposed to consider as truthful? They both can't be. If he was lying the first time, it's likely that he's lying again. If he told the truth the first time and contradicted himself at the convention, well, not only is he overtly dishonest, but pretty damn stupid besides. This Democrat in name only is about the least credible politico in the country, yet the GOP ushered him out as one of their big guns. Shows you how lacking the Republicans are in terms of reputable spokesmen and persuasive operatives. But, go figure: this bucket of pig vomit is from that uncivilized and backward state of Georgia, where the mentally retarded voters turned out Max Cleland, a true war hero, a man who lost three limbs in Viet Nam protecting this country, because the state GOP accused this great man of being soft on national defense. How absurd. But Rafe and Kile and Newt and Raylene and the rest of the morons in Zell's constituency bought into it, and this speaks volumes. Kinda puts the i in ignorant rednecks. However, what was so noteworthy about Miller's speech was his obsession with all the wasteful and unnecessary weapon systems Kerry felt were dubious, and his condemning of a Democrat who was uncomfortable with the idea of wasting the taxpayers' money on war material that truly wasn't needed. Miller should just climb back under the slimy rock he came from and accept the fact that he's two decades past it.

A somewhat amusing quote on Zell's convention speech from congressman Charles Rangel (D) of New York, When I heard Zell Miller going on about how he once was lost and now is found, I thought I heard the strains of Jimmy Swaggart. I thought I might get him to touch my hurt knee to heal it. But he's such a mean b*stard, I was afraid he'd just hurt the other knee.

Zell Miller's speech was so bad and off-the-wall-crazy, it was laughable. I wish every speaker at the GOP convention had sounded this loony. But when things really got even more pathetic and funny (unless you are Chris Matthews) was when MSNBC's Matthews was interviewing Miller after his speech and Miller just had a spastic hissy-fit floor-kicking tantrum the likes of which I have never seen on television before. It showed Miller could not answer questions that he should have had no problem answering. How dare a journalist do his job and ask questions?! Hehehe. Miller ended up hissing, I wish I could challenge you to a duel! Sounds like the pathetic longings of an emasculated and senile man. He really does sound senile. I think he may be.

The only reason Zell Miller was chosen to give the keynote address was to score partisan points against the Democrats. Having one of their own slamming them was a very wily strategy however. While swing voters are still critical, turning out the core is going to be important. Having a Democrat give a red meat speech savaging his own party will polarize and give heart to Republicans and conservative Democrats. The core part of his message was that the Democratic party has moved away from the interventionist tradition of Harry Truman, John Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson to embrace what amounts to a soft multi-lateralism. I don't really think that the Democratic party has moved away from that tradition. The rank and file, who by and large were tempered by the Vietnam experience, are a little more judicious with regards to US involvement in political hotspots. But the party leadership is still dominated by the same in-groups that were around during Truman and Kennedy's time. I don't think Miller speech won over any moderates, but it was a raw partisaned calculation on the part of Bush's political team. As for Miller's speech itself, there was really nothing noteworthy there. It got the partisans on both sides going, but it was really a rambling speech with no core themes.

A democrat voting republican, and at the same time ripping on John Kerry, is anything better than that?

His defection helps GWB immensely because he has carried himself well, despite an onslaught of derisive questioning by the left-media, and abusive name-calling from his former constituency. I think that the traitor is the center of the party, rather than an individual like Zell Miller or other thinking democrat. Most defectors will remain democrats and try to bring the party back to some semblance of reason. UPDATE: The clarion call for true democrats is this: there is no place for a democrat like Zell Miller anymore, prior to speaking at the RNC, in the Democrat Party. What he is so angry about is that they INVITED him back, only to toss him and his views and his voice aside to pursue the Howard Dean agenda: WE MUST NOT FIGHT! I hate war, too, but I hate being unprepared for a fight, much worse! We didn't start this fight, but we damn well better end it, or it's the end of us, and don't think it can't happen. There is no room for that attitude in today's Demo Party, but THAT IS the platform of the present day Republican Party. Love him or hate him, Bush will fight that fight. If you don't think it's necessary, you know what to do. If you do think it's necessary, YOU know what to do.

As if it mattered to the soon-to-retire former associate of Georgia's favorite bigot, Lester Maddox, however, Zig Zag Zel has assured himself of never being mistaken for, or being identified as a statesman.

There are actually people who believe in fighting to preserve our freedom i n the Democratic Party? Men who would rather destroy terrorists then talk them to death? Like U.N. negotiations would have saved those from children going through the hell they encountered in Russia over the last two days, right? 'Damn U.S. warmongers have no business sending our children to protect this country from terrorist threats.' Dang. There are REAL MEN in the Democratic Party. Will wonders never cease. Go Zell! If they don't wantcha, you can fight with those of us who believe we're worth fighting for!

Zig Zag Zel (and he talks about Kerry flip flopping . . . Zel created the term),is an opportunist, first and foremost. Unfortuntely, the Democratic Party has served this segregationist very, very well. That is until he decided that he was going to retire from the Senate, and this is his last term in the Senate. Zel started having problems in or around Clinton's second term. He got confused, senile, and angry during the Clinton years. I think because Clinton ignored him and Zel will not be ignored. Maybe the Republicans have promised him a cushy job after he retires. I couldn't believe it when after Zel's Holy-Roller-like speech, he was sitting right beside Bush 41, whom Zel trashed at the 92 Democratic Convention and, oddly enough, he was the keynote speaker then, but it was for the Democrats. Zel needs to get some attention now as well to try to sell more of his book. Without any hooplah going on in his life, people have forgotten his book. By acting the way he did, it may bring back peoples' interests, and his publisher will be happy again. Maybe Zel is hoping to get a cushy, high-paying position if Bush is reselected, like an ambassador position. If he is picked to be an ambassador if Bush is reselected, I hope he gets to be the Ambasador of Iraq. He is so behind Bush and this war, maybe he needs to be in the thick of things. Who knows??? This man has been paid, or is going to be paid in one way or another. Like I said before, Zel Zig Zag Miller is an opportunist segregationist above ANYTHING. He fits right into the Republican Party of today.

I guess it was okay with all the libs when (i) Al Sharton was accusing Bush of trying to buy votes, (ii) when the pathological liar Michael Moore was given the presidental treatment at the DNC on the heels of his mendacious crockumentary that purposely misled the public to affect the election or when (iii) Al Gore lost his cookies on, not one or two, but numerous occasions. Zell was right on the mark. Oh no! God forbid! He was negative! Maybe it had something to do with the nay votes John Kerry submitted on defense weaponry for the last 20 years that if he had succeeded, would have left our military pathetically underequipped; and led to thousands more deaths. My mother always says, the truth hurts! And for the Dems nothing could hurt more than hearing it from one of their own.
ClassicTVFan47 09/03/2004
Brought out the truths about Kerry in a no-holds-barred fashion. Truly exposed Kerry's senate record, which Kerry himself spent less than a minute on in his convention. Kerry's obviously a anti-war dove who wants to destroy the national defense in our nation and doesn't want to spread freedom to other lands. And, remember, Zell Miller is a democrat!
AryanDan 09/02/2004
What is going on here? Is Zell part of a larger movement. Lieberman (D) also supports Bush and the war with Iraq, personally speaking, I believe any government that ignores the rights of the individual should be replaced immediately, but why stop at Iraq, why not Zimbabwe? China's government doesn't respect freedom. Sudan's doesn't respect freedom! Why are the governments that are an enemy to XXXXXX are the ONLY ones being liberated?
twinmom101 09/02/2004
I have watched much of the convention and found speakers like Mc Cain and Giuliani to be smart, cohesive and positive. Theirs were speeches that made someone like me (a democrat) actually consider switching parties at some point. Then came Zell and my mind quickly changed right back. His speech was embarrassing, not just to the republicans, but for our nation as a whole. Is this what political rallying has come to? Try this: compare Zell Miller's speech to that of the Democrat's keynote speaker, Barak Obama and ask yourself, which speaker showed a commitment to mending our differences and bringing America together and which one went on a rampage of personal attacks? As someone who has started showing intrest in some republican principles, Zell Miller's speech was a big negative and a turn-off.
driver 8 09/02/2004
Zell Miller came off as a negative, angry, foolish old blowhard, standing up there throwing a hissy fit and a temper tantrum. He was not only an embarrasment to himself, but also to the sleazy Republican smear-machine who recruited him to help them do their dirty work. There is a very good chance this display of unmitigated filth will backfire on them in colossal fasion. Very humorous indeed.

I have heard Zell Millers speach and I truly believe it is the best speech so far. He spoke with so much passion and vigor that I didn't expect from usually laid back Zell. His speech was very informative and still quite funny. Excellent speech and excellent morals. Just like a republican!

i saw zell miller's keynote speech at the democratic convention in 1992 where he eviscerated then president george herbert walker bush. his attack on president bush was scathing and was one of the highlights of the convention. i was a supporter of governor clinton at the time so i was obviously quite pleased to have an ardent and eloquent supporter like governor miller express his support for the man i wanted to be my president. twelve years later much has changed; the single most important event in 21st century occurred when madmen filled with hate for america crashed planes into our buildings and killed almost 3000 of our citizens. this event is our generation's pearl harbor. the world is a different place than it was on that hot summer night in 1992, and senator miller expressed that in no uncertain terms tonight. his actions are not those of a traitor, they are those of a patriot, of a man who loves and is deeply devoted to his family and his country. he expressed my feelings as well; i was born and raised a democrat and last year i became a republican when i realized that my party was not willing to make the difficult decisions to fight this war against evil. senator miller's speech tonight more than any other i have heard at either convention starkly contrasted the vast differences between the nominees of the democratic and republican parties.
