Abington Friends Schools - Jenkintown, Penna. 5

I am an alum of AFS and I loved my AFS experience. Over the last twenty years, AFS has really given their students a true "liberal arts" experience with a range of academic courses, excellent sports, and visual and performing arts as well.

Also, as someone who has been in education for a long time, it is important to remember that there are no "good schools"...only good fits for a student.  AFS was a good fit for me.

Abington Friends is actually located in Jenkintown, Pa. Go figure. Sports fields front the campus before you get to the main buildings of the school. It's located in a nice suburban neighborhood that is not that far from the Philadelphia border.

I can't say I know a whole lot about the school academically other than it's #18 Rating among the Elite 40 Private Schools in the Philadelphia area. I would have thought they'd have been rated higher, but I really don't have much to base that on. I do know this....There was a kid who went to AFS who desperately wanted to transfer to my (Private) H.S.. He took the test to get in several times and didnt make it. Was it because my school was hard or his was bad or he was stupid? Who knows?

Abington Friends has made a name for itself as a H.S. Basketball power. They Dominate the Friends School League in Boy's Basketball ( not so much in any other Sport). They have done so by openly recruiting area Basketball talent. This is a dubious practice but has served them well. It can be argued ( and they do ) that attracting Talented basketball players is no different than attracting talented Musicians, Math Students, Artists or any other kid with exceptional ability. The argument hasnt gone over well with it's League peers. AFS's Basketball success has forced other league schools to address their commitment ( recruitment) of players to compete with this League Dynamo. What they're doing is the same thing that happens at Penn Charter and The Haverford School ( Quaker schools) and the other Inter-Ac schools. I havent met enough of their students or alumni to give them more than Three Stars. I think I'd be inclinded to move it up a Star though.
