It surprised me how close it was, it surprised me how many people voted for them and it surprises me how many ignorant people we have in Palm Beach county Florida who can't follow simple instructions.

Suprising outcome? Hell yes. This is where we first learn about vote caging, and election fraud on a nationwide scale by the Republican machine. Everyone should vote, not if the Republicans have a say. In 2004 they challanged thousands of African American soldiers right to cast a ballot. They never received a piece of mail, meant to verify residence, since they were in Iraq or Afganistan. Now thats supporting the troops. Shamefull and wrong, and the News won't cover it here. It is covered in the U.K.

Very surprising as the public, or at least those paying attention, were reminded of the impotency of their vote. A couple of times a year I will still find someone who is ignorant of the results of the popular vote in this election.

This one was a huge surprise to about 49% of people who voted.

Hardly democracy's proudest moment when the Supreme Court has to choose between two less than perfect scenarios and lawyers on both sides are fighting to get people's votes disquailfied. Bush promised that the episode would be the end of the prior decade's increasingly nasty political fighting. That turned out to be his first lie.

Two poorly run campaigns stagger to a finish. Bush is the shrewder politician, (note that I did not say more intelligent) and prevails by a nudge. Say what you like about Florida (and there's plenty to say) the factor that made this campaign close was Gore's mediocre performance.

Surprising loser because they actually won. Yeah, its surprising when you get more votes and still loose. Give me a S-U-P-R-E-, well, you know the rest.

This should be a surprise to all the liberal smarty pants who thought everything was so wonderful during the Clinton years. If America was in a state of Xanadu, then why did the algore lose? (I misspelled his name on purpose)

Not truly surprising, despite the now legendary close vote margin and the questionable Florida balloting process. Gore ran a very uneven campaign that started out slow and never gained enough momentum to seal the deal. Clinton was a bit of a weight around Gore's neck, specifically because of the Lewinsky scandal, but picking Lieberman as Vice President gave Gore some credibility on moral issues. The economy was slowing down by the 2nd half of 2000, never a good sign for an incumbent party. Still, Gore should have been able to take it, given that many questioned Bush's qualifications for high office at the time, even many conservative voices. Neither candidate ran a compelling campaign; it was up to Gore to define himself as the candidate with ideas, but he came up somewhat short of the mark. The Democrats haven't really recovered from this one yet. A McCain-Gore race would have been more interesting in 2000; certainly the outcome would have been different, with John McCain winning by a significant margin. Bush was one of the weaker candidates to emerge out of the Republican field that year, but won primarily through use of the Bush brand ideological positioning, and prolific fundraising. There are many what-if's to ponder about the pivotal 2000 election.

Suprising you have got to be kidding me. Dull and duller could run for President and Vice President of the local PTA and they probably would not get elected. Not a personality between the two of them. Today you have to be out going and some what dynamic, these two never had a chance.

Gore should have won handily, but his campaign was fraught with missteps and mediocre strategy. He made bad decisions that came back to haunt him.

The Dem Party had a chance to have Pres. Clinton resign, and show the world President Al Gore in office moving into the election (easy win) vs. a Governor. But, they hadn't the nerve to force Pres. Clinton aside (and it was in his interests to stick around, clearly con$idering the pardon$ later on).

Duh. They didn't lose. Although Gore has only himself to blame, Bush stole an election that should have never been as close as it was.

Al Gore really won, he just didn't take office due to the Bush gang's illegal dealings.

al gore lost an election he should have won. gore ran the worst campaign i have ever seen; he seemed to waffle on almost every major issue, and he failed to run on the clinton/gore record and use his biggest asset in the campaign. he got what he deserved.

The closest percentage margin since 1796 (which actually ended in a tie between Jefferson and Aaron Burr) which spurred the first real election reform, the 12th Amendment. Gore disavowed Clinton, to his peril, and Bush ran as a Compassionate Conservative. So many missteps by both campaigns, it looked like neither really wanted to win.
