This was a lackluster duo. Poor Bob Dole never got the nomination when the GOP actually had a chance to win.

I felt bad watching a good man (Dole) fight a losing battle against a superior candidate. . .it was like everyone knew the outcome already and Dole simply followed his marching orders. . .and then Dole showed more personality after the election than during it. . .

Dole got the nomination because it was "his turn"...another example of how stupid the Republican Party can be in the post-Reagan era. Clinton was hammered daily as a liberal; yet, in reality, Dole was to the left of ol Bill. George McGovern had it right when he spoke out against Dole's hypocrisy re/ trying to pass himself off as a conservative. Dole and McGovern were co-authors of the original welfare bill back in the 1960's.

Dole's campaign was a disgrace. His staff shouldn't have been fired, they should have been horsewhipped. Frankly even a well run campaign would have had trouble with Clinton that year, but Dole didn't even bother going through the motions.

Not really surprising in the final analysis. Although Clinton was looking like a one-term President in early 1995 with the Republicans in firm control of Congress, Clinton managed to move himself to the center just in time for the election, depriving the Republicans of any artillery they may have been able to use against them. The beginning of the high-technology boom in the mid-1990's also caused a spike in economic growth, thus giving Clinton a good boost. Dole ran a very weak campaign, but frankly no Republican, with the exception of Colin Powell, could have beaten him at the time. However the fact that Clinton didn't get score over 50% of the vote signified that people were concerned about some of the personal ethical lapses of the Clinton administration. Clinton was a President of immense political talent, however some of his personal problems kept him from achieving true greatness.

The economy was beginning to turn around, and Clinton had a few political victories to brag about at this point. Dole was in the end just too far out of touch with the American mood, and Clinton was not surprisingly re-elected.

Dole conducted one of the lamest campaigns I can remember. When he was nominated, I remember thinking, this will be the ugliest campaign anyone can remember for a long time, but he never got out any mud or anything else. His biggest gaffes, which were absolutely devastating, were falling off the stage at a campaign stop, and making reference to the Brooklyn Dodgers (they moved to Los Angeles in 1956). His staff forgot to update him.
