 | jgls (12) 09/29/2007 | the writing was on the wall after the nixon resignation. this was a year in which someone as incompetent as jimmy carter could get elected president. thankfully the american people came to their senses 4 years later.

 | irishgit (138) 02/08/2007 | Running against the memories of Watergate, the Nixon presidency, and his own purported physical ineptitude, Ford didn't have much chance. Not a badly run campaign, but no match for the good ole boys on the other side, who played politics that year the way Okies play football most years.

 | abichara (60) 12/02/2006 | Ford's loss wasn't that surprising, given that Carter in 1976 was ahead almost the entire time. The race only started closing up in the final weeks leading up to the election. I think if Ford had gotten an extra week to campaign, he might have won over Carter at the end of the day, as the polling trends were shifting towards him in the last week. But that 30 point deficit that he started with 3 months earlier proved too much to overcome. In my view, Carter's election was strictly a reaction to Watergate and the "imperial presidency" of the Nixon years.

 | Redoedo (39) 09/06/2004 | Unfortunately for Ford, he wasn't able to overcome the shadow of Watergate. Many Americans at the time thought Ford was wrong to pardon Nixon, and voted Jimmy Carter in because he seemed trustworthy and ethical. Not really surprising, as the generally wanted a change in direction.

 | EschewObfuscation (61) 09/02/2004 | This was pretty shocking in light of Nixon's landlside only four years earlier. It was certainly heavily attributable to the Watergate scandal and the state of the American economy, which was characterized as stagflation, slow growth but inflationary. This happened shortly after Nixon abandoned the gold standard for American currency, which is still argued today. Gerald Ford never made a case why he should be elected, try as he might.
