 | Victor83 (35) 02/16/2007 | By 1964, after the assassination of JFK, Goldwater stood no chance. No one could have challenged Johnson that year. However, had Goldwater not bowed out in favor of Nixon four years earlier, it is likely that he would have been elected.

I didn't listen to them. I voted for Goldwater, and sure enough, WE HAD WAR!

 | irishgit (138) 02/06/2007 | Pretty hard for anyone to have beaten Kennedy's ghost that year, which is what he was really running against.
He was positioned in a manner that allowed the Johnson campaign to portray him as a dangerous extremist, in some of the most savage attack ads in television history.

 | Redoedo (39) 09/05/2004 | Hardly a shocker. After Kennedy's death, most of the country was solidly behind Johnson. Even if Kennedy had lived, Goldwater most likely would have lost, as many saw him as far too radical to serve as the President of the United States in the middle of the Cold War.
