bib overalls 4

Overalls are rarely seen on males these days (unless they're little boys or older gentlemen). I admit, it's rather refreshing to see a younger man (let's say about my age) in overalls. In my opinion, some men can really look nice in them (when worn the right way, that is.) Like the guy pictured in the ad I see on this page. UPDATE: Sometimes I think the stereotypes can be quite cruel. Overalls (whether worn by men or women) have suffered many unfair labels. The "farmer" stereotype is one of them. Although I realize that some (but not all) farmers may choose to wear them, it just isn't nice to make fun of someone's trade, especially the well-needed (and greatly underrated) trade of agriculture (well, we want to eat, don't we?). Farmers can be quite smart, if you ask me. And those who do happen to wear overalls are choosing something to wear that for years have been considered practical for the job. Other laborers have done (and sometimes still do) the same. So they should never be disrespected, whether they wear overalls or not. Now I am well aware that overalls are not for everybody; if they're not your thing, then you shouldn't wear them. But let's not make fun of those who do. They're just pants that have an added bonus of a bib and shoulder straps (as if there's something really wrong with that). They may even be a tad more costly than the average pair of pants, as it obviously takes more material to make them. And... if they keep one covered, well, that's really what counts in the first place... doesn't it?!

I like them on women, but others, probably, should avoid them.  Note the splendor of this picture.

I have a soft spot in my heart for bib overalls not because of any fashion statement but because they were part of the Carroll Shelby persona in the 1950s and 1960s. When Shelby first got into racing he was still a chicken farmer and legend has it one day he was late arriving to a racing event and did not have time to change out of his farm clothes. Shelby's website has him quoted as saying ...."I drove out to the racetrack, in my overalls. It was hot, about 110 degrees, and I decided to leave the overalls on because I thought they would be cooler to drive in. I won the race and everyone giggled and laughed, but they ran my picture in the paper in those overalls. I decided, shoot this is a pretty good deal, and I just kept on doing it."  Old Shelby Mustang and Cobra roadster advertisements from the 1960s are not difficult to find and in each ad, along with the Cobra logo, is a pair of bib overalls hanging up in the background. In addition, with a little diligence, you can find that original picture of Shelby accepting the trophy wearing the overalls. He wore them quite often until he had to give up driving during the 1960 season after winning the USAC championship and a year after driving to victory at LeMans. If bib overalls are good enough for Carroll Shelby, they're good enough for me. Four stars.
