What is going on with parents these days? I never would've DREAMED of acting up in public like that when I was young. My parents didn't tolerate that kind of stuff.

Kids are a pain in the ass....but their unruly behavior is the responsibility of the parents. Please control your children.

Depends on the age and on the extent of screaming. I expect it from a 1 year old, but not an 8+ year old pounding the floor over a video game or something.

One summer afternoon, i got outta bed, and went ouside to get the mail. As i was enjoying the quiet, all of a sudden the neighbors kid starts yelling to his friend down the sidewalk. My day went downhill from there.

The problem is that we have a bunch of proud, self-indulgent parents too focused on earning money, yet feeling such guilt that they have to make Junior feel "special." Their precious children need to "express themselves." They need space to "grow." Yet, at the same time, the same parents are too afraid to take Junior to the park (which is why there is so much obesity.) They're too afraid to let Junior think for himself. No doubt this is probably fueled by the parental neuroses: "if my parents didn't spank me or criticize me, I would be a much healthier person." What errant BS. This lack of discipline explains precisely why we're seeing such a surge of poorly behaved brats in restaurants, groceries, and other public spaces. The idiot legislators who are trying to eradicate spanking need to understand that it is precisely this soft, namby-pamby attitude that is causing society to grow selfish, narcissistic, and hence more dangerous: and believe me, I've been seeing this disturbing trend over the course of the last 15 years or so! That's why grade inflation, cheating, and other quick fixes are on the rise (i.e., parents don't understand why Junior got a C on his assignment when they wrote it for him), and why road rage and other forms of violence are spiralling like a bat out of hell. I call "Time-out" for "time-outs." I agree with one of the reviewers that these parents--spoiled, overgrown children themselves--are the ones who deserve a real whipping.

Whatever the situation is, I hold the parents rsponsible. If I can discipline my kids and make them behave, so can you. If I can remove myself and my kids from a bad situation so can you. Kids are kids and they will misbehave, that's a given. It's up to the parents to correct the problem.

I think there are different levels of screaming and different circumstances. Most of the time, it's a tired cranky kid and the parents are just trying to get done and get gone. However, the older kids that throw tantrums and scream because they aren't getting their way should be punished. Problem is, what kind of punishment will our society allow? Used to be you could spank your kid once on the behind when they began to behave badly in public. Now however, parents aren't allowed to be firm or to swat their bottoms in public without fear of being called in to the nearest Child Protective Office!

In my teens I worked in a supermarket and I'll never forget this kid who came in screaming and me laughing at the kid and people giving scorned looks in that kid's direction all because of all the noise he was making. At face value this kid looked normal and then the Mother of this child dropped the bombshell and said that her child was actually autistic and hated coming out in public places. I'll never forget the hurt on her face as it was something that she had to endure on a regular basis. From that day forward I never criticise parents who have screaming kids as you just simply don't know.

It isn't the kid who irritates me, it's the do-nothing parent paralyzed with fear who refuses to discipline the brat because of some fear that actually holding a kid responsible will turn them into little puddles of jelly. . .I've had do-nothing parents look at me with hatred when I've asked a waiter to move me to a table away from the chaos that they refuse to control. . .they never say anything when I shoot them a 'you're a lousy parent' look back. . .

this can be maddening when this screaming kid is running around. and doing as they please and the parent is doing nothing to stop it. on the other hand you have a tired cranky kid who starts screaming and the parent is trying to go as fast as they can so they can leave { like right in the middle of grocery shopping} and they ARE trying to calm the child. I turn the other way. unruly brats who act like animals make my blood boil . tired grouchy kids I can take, and it is temporary I can take.

kids need to be taught how to behave period. more parents just need to stay firm about what they allow and don't allow. don't punish one day that you don't do the next. thats what makes screaming spoiled kids because they know you'll give in eventually.

Well you can take my word for it that sometimes there is nothing you can do about the screaming.
