I've heard the argument, and it may have some validity, but I always remember this crazy old lady my parents made courtesy visits to when I was a child. She had stuff plugged into virtually every outlet in the house, and the rare empty exceptions had tape over them. She believed, you see, that electricity leaked out of the open outlets and lay around waiting to jump her.

I didn't know that stuff that's turned off still drains energy as long as it's plugged in. Apparently, though, it does. I might start unplugging my computer (all I would have to do is yank the extension cord out of the socket), but there are a lot of things in the house I would need to keep plugged in (like the filters and aerators for my fish/crab tanks), and there's a bunch of things my husband wouldn't WANT to unplug ( . . . kind of kills the purpose of having a remote control for the TV when you gotta get up to plug it in, anyhow).
