 | VirileVagabond (32) 10/08/2006 | Though his comedy is often a bit too sophomoric for my tastes, Mel Brooks has become "the" director of film parodies (e.g. "Blazing Saddles", "Space Balls", and "Robin Hood: Men In Tights"). While his earlier films like the brilliant "Young Frankenstein" (1974) and "Blazing Saddles" (1974) had Brooks at the top of his game, I have never thought that "Spaceballs" (1987) and some other later films deserved the praise that many still give. I read once that Brooks always has a Nazi in each production, and these characters sometimes feel forced. Brooks also seems to be limited in his directorial scope, which also causes his rating to suffer in my book. Mel Brooks (aka Melvin Kaminsky) was born June 28, 1926 in Brooklyn.

 | Drummond (54) 12/15/2005 | Love his politics, but I think most of his humor was sophomoric.

 | Mad Hatter (37) 12/21/2004 | He made some hilariuos movies that bashed anyone, anything, any race, any religion. He showed no mercy to anyone. Also, AFI named Blazing Saddles one of the 10 most funniest movies of all-time. (#6 if I remember right)

 | ClassicTVFan47 (36) 07/22/2004 | After the extremely successful and enjoyable Get Smart, Mel Brooks moved on to make some of the worst comedy movies of all time. Spaceballs is an extremely weak parody of Star Wars and merchandising. History of the World, Part I is extremely offensive, boring, and in poor taste. Blazing Saddles is equally unfunny--bogged down in some of the worst profanity phrases ever as well as some of film's most tastless gags. Even worse, Brooks is an awful actor--but makes his way into all of his films.

 | callmetootie (4) 04/10/2001 | I said that Alfred Hitchcock deserves #1 on this list, but Mel Brooks deserves #1 + 1. He is by name, the best director ever born. He has made some of the greatest movies ever thought up by man. He deserves so much more credit. The Producers, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Silent Movie, History Of the World, and many, many more.

 | CastleBee (81) 04/05/2001 | Idiotic, irreverent sense of humor, and complete nut case – I love this guy! How could I not, he’s responsible for two of my all time favorite movies – “Blazing Saddles” and “Young Frankenstein” – which contain some of the best comic lines in the history of film. I haven’t been in love with everything he’s ever done but to me he will always be the king of spoofs and parodies
