Coined by H.L. Mencken in the 1920s. Refers to the region of the US where evangelical and fundamentalist Christianity are most widespread, primarily the South and Great Plains regions. Has a nice alliterative ring to it ('B-B'). The name has remained a surprisingly accurate designation in the 80+ years since Mencken baptised it, though mass migration from the North-East has made certain areas of the Bible Belt (Florida, Northern Virginia) less religious than they used to be.
