 | DrEntropy (38) 03/25/2007 | An inspired coinage. According to Wiki, it was originally used by turn-of-the-century humorist O. Henry in reference to Honduras (the most backward country in Central America). The term became generalized to much of Latin America, and more recently to any country whose economy remains dependent on the export of one or two commodities (sugar, oil, coffee; ideally, actual bananas) and/or where government is characterized by incompetence, chaos and corruption.
