Aside from all of the Manson insanity that gets associated with the song, and the awful Motley Crue cover, and Bono's hamfisted and bombastic Rattle and Hum intro "Charles Manson stole this song.." to U2's version, what gets lost in the shuffle is that this is a superb example of a merger of hard psychedelia and proto metal. McCartney's bass is on fire, the screaming guitars are awesome, and the whole thing is experimental without being preposterous. McCartney had read something about The Who claiming to have created the most dirty sounding and loud rock track ever ( probably "I Can See For Miles" ) and decided to try to do that himself. A thrilling and exciting song, to say the least.
