Sure its a sport, but it always seemed to me that the horse was doing most of the work.

The athlete is the horse. It'll make no sense for this or another esquiterian event to be classified as a sport. Though time is factored, it is how fit the horse is, not the person. Even though excercise will factor to make the rider as light as (s)he can to make the horse go faster, it is minimal as if a some rider weighing at 230 lbs. can finish in first based on how fit the horse is.

It takes some skill- but it shouldn't be called 'horse racing' because it's the little freak-midget who wants to race, not the horse who is being slapped with a whip. . .

Sport is any athletic competition. One element of sports is that the participant athletes must know that it is a competition. I believe that race horses DO know when it is a race and when it is not. Therefore, I feel horse racing is a sport and the horses are athletes.
