Billy Connolly had a funny observation on this: "Parents would always ask if you had clean underwear on, in case you had an accident. You can imagine your father going up to the hospital and the nurse saying ' Mr Connolly, Billy's in a terrible state. He's been hit by a double decker bus, he's in intensive care and I don't even know if I should let you in to see him - incidentally, his underwear is a f*****g disgrace"

My grandmother was a good one for this advice as well as my mother. I wonder where this got started!

Look, if you're in a life-threatening situation like a car about to run you down, it's a bowel-evacuating event. Machts nicht about clean or not because it's going to be soiled eventually.

And even at 11 years old, I found myself wondering if the doctors in emergency would really comment on my underwear, instead of re-attaching my leg.

She did insist on the clean underwear but it wasn't in case of an accident.
